4 Ways Knowing Your Style Makes Decorating Easier

Have you ever been so excited to buy decor, maybe a piece of art, a rug, or throw pillows, and then found they just didn’t look right when you brought them home? Have you ever chosen the wrong paint color and had to repaint the whole room? Are you frustrated because you’ve wasted too much time and money choosing all these things wrong, the first (or maybe even the second or third) time? Decorating struggles like these can be incredibly frustrating, but they can all be solved by learning one thing, your unique decorating style.

Would you rather watch?

Want to listen on the go?

Your decorating style, or what I like to call Your Unique Style DNA, is the very first thing you have to figure out when you’re decorating your home.

If you don’t sort your style out first, you will continually choose decor for your home – throw pillows, curtains, artwork, paint colors – that just don’t work, and you’ll waste so much time and money doing that.

But if you really nail your decorating style, you will save time and money and create a more stylish home you love too.

Here are 4 reasons why knowing your decorating style makes decorating your home SO much easier!

1. Knowing your decorating style gives you bumpers or guidelines

This is by far one of the biggest reasons you need to know your decorating style.

You can love many things when you go to the decor store or Homesense Target, but you don’t need to bring all of them home.

So these guidelines, do you remember those bumpers they used to put in the gutters for little kids at the bowling alley? They were designed to help guide the ball down the alley to the pins, not here, there, and everywhere, even if the ball was thrown a little wildly, those bumpers provided success for beginners by keeping the ball on the right track.

Knowing your style gives you a framework to guide you. The good thing is, is that you choose this framework so it’s not applied by someone else and you don’t have to feel stuck by it. Rather, you get to feel free by these guidelines.

2. Knowing your decorating style saves you time

Picture walking into your favorite decor store and asking for a lamp or searching online and simply typing in “table lamp”, how many results do you think you would get? How do you think the salesperson would look at you when you just said you wanted a lamp?

Well, the search results will give you 966 million results! (I googled it once when I was looking this up).

But if you know your style and can describe it with the right words too and add those words into your search online or when you’re talking to a salesperson at the store, that will reduce the overwhelming amount of choices that you have.

Simply adding the words, for example, “French country” before “table lamp” in the same search online reduces the results by millions.

Having the vocabulary and the words to describe your style means you spend much less time searching for the decor that you want. And who doesn’t want to save some time?

3. Knowing your decorating style saves you money

When you know your style, you will no longer just grab whatever seems to catch your eye at the store. You’ll also be able to make choices with a firm grasp on what you know love and what will work in your home and what won’t. You’ll easily be able to say no to the things that don’t fit with what you’ve decided your style is, which will save you so much money.

Let’s take my style for example. Truthfully, I like a lot of things and can appreciate a lot of decor styles, but I know what style works for me in our current house, and therefore what pieces and rugs and curtains and artwork fit within that.

I have those guidelines to help me choose when I’m out shopping. So if I find something unique and interesting while I’m out shopping, that’s okay – it doesn’t mean I have to bring it home if I know that it won’t fit in the style that I’ve chosen for my house.

It’s okay to appreciate other styles – it doesn’t mean you have to have them in your space.

By following the guidelines I’ve set for myself with my unique decorating style, I no longer waste money on things that won’t work in my space.

4. Knowing your decorating style gives you confidence

One of the things my readers, friends, and other mommas have told me is that they lack confidence, and have trouble choosing decor.

But when you know your decorating style and you stop wasting time and money on the wrong things (and you begin to choose the RIGHT things for your home over and over again), you will begin to feel confident in your choices.

Summary

Your decorating style or what I like to call your unique style, DNA is the very first thing you have to figure out when decorating your home, because every other decorating decision you make depends on the style that you like.

Knowing your decorating style will save you so much money and help you create a more stylish home you love so much faster!

When you know your style, you will:

have guidelines around what to choose for your home

have the right descriptive words when gathering inspiration or shopping for your home

you’ll save time and money when buying decor and styling your home

you’ll have confidence in your design choices

All of this will make decorating your home so very much easier for you
